Projector or big TV: which is right for your home theatre?

A simple comparison of projectors and large TVs for Chennai homes — picture size, room light, space and how you watch.

Start with how you watch

If the room is used for news, cricket and daytime TV with the lights on, a large TV is usually the easier choice. If you want movie nights with a truly big picture, a projector gives you a cinema-sized image that no TV can match at a similar budget.

Picture size and seating distance

The right size depends on how far you sit. As a simple rule, a screen that fills a comfortable part of your view — without making you turn your head — feels immersive. Projectors make 100 to 150-inch pictures practical; TVs above 85 inches become expensive and hard to move into apartments.

Room light matters

Projectors look their best in a darker room. If your room has windows that can't be fully covered, an ambient-light-rejecting (ALR) screen helps keep contrast. A TV is brighter and copes better with daylight.

  • Dedicated, dark room → projector
  • Bright living room, mixed use → large TV or ALR screen
  • Both → TV for daily use, drop-down screen for movie nights

Sound is half the experience

Whichever you choose, the speakers make the theatre. A matched front left–centre–right set keeps dialogue anchored to the picture, and surround speakers place you inside the scene.
